Rake and Riddle

The rake and riddle is a restaurant between Penclawdd and Gowerton and is recommended in the Hill House – Gower self catering holiday cottage post on dining out in Gower. It has a good reputation for good every day food. The name comes from the implements that were used by the cockles gatherers of Penclawdd . A hand rake was used to scrape the cockles from the bed into a pile before thy were put into the riddle. The riddle has holes of a specific size so that when the riddle is shaken the smaller immature cockles fall through the holes and are returned to the beds. The cockles remaining are gathered in hessian sacks. When full the sacks were transported home for processing.
