The Gower Peninsula
The Gower peninsula is located on the South Wales coast to the west of Swansea. Uniquely, it was designated as the UK’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1956. Consequently, this long AONB status means that its splendid scenery has not been spoiled by overdevelopment and commercialization. In addition, Gower is perhaps best known for its coastline and, as a matter of fact, it attracts water sports enthusiasts from all over the world. It is one of the United Kingdoms’ top destinations for surfing. Furthermore, you can see some of what the Gower has to offer visitors by viewing our Gower peninsula page and our Tourist Information posts.
The City of Swansea, Swansea Bay and Mumbles
Swansea is the gateway to the Gower peninsula and nestles on the eastern edge of Swansea Bay. The bay is a five-mile stretch of sand running between Swansea and Mumbles head. In fact, the world’s first commercial passenger railway ran between Swansea and Mumbles. The Mumbles railway has long since gone and an extensive waterfront promenade now follows its path. The promenade incorporates a pedestrian walkway, a demarcated cycle path, and a jogging track with fitness apparatus.
There are numerous access points onto the beach from the promenade and various visitor attractions along its length. In addition, Swansea has an abundance of award-winning public parks and gardens. Victoria, Singleton, Brynmill and Clyne parks are adjacent to the promenade. Finally, the Bay Area and Mumbles have much to offer holiday-makers and you can read more about Swansea’s holiday attractions by viewing our Swansea Bay and Mumbles page.
Llanrhidian
Llanrhidian lies on the north coast of the Gower peninsula about 10 miles from the City of Swansea. It is one of the oldest and best-preserved villages on the Gower peninsula. The centre of the village is a conservation area and there is virtually no through traffic. As a result, the village and the area around Hill House is very quiet and tranquil. The parish church and local public house are about 100 yards from Hill House.
Because all of the Gower peninsula’s bays are within easy reach from Llanrhidian, Hill House is the ideal location for your family holiday. There are not many beachside self-catering holiday cottage in Gower and a short car ride is nearly always required to reach your preferred destination. Unlike Llanrhidian most of the other villages are plagued by traffic and can be crowed with tourists at peak times.
You can see what Llanrhidian has to offer by exploring the interactive map and reading the information provided on our Llanrhidian page.
